I am thankful to God for what Christian Science has done...

I am thankful to God for what Christian Science has done for me. I was a great sufferer from rheumatism, asthma, catarrh, and stomach trouble, and was in pain day and night. I could not lie down to sleep at all; in fact, my condition caused misery both to myself and family, and I prayed to die and be out of my agony. Being a great reader of the Bible, I had read and reread Christ Jesus' teachings in his life from Bethlehem to the cross, and all the good he did for suffering humanity. It chafed me to think I could not have been there to have touched the hem of his garment and be healed. I asked the minister one evening why men could not be healed now, but he only made me an evasive answer. Like Mary, I had pondered Jesus' sayings in my heart, and this answer did not satisfy my cravings.

About two years after this I was visiting some friends in another city, and when I entered the house I asked the lady, who looked so sweet and so well, what kind of medicine she was using, knowing that she had been given up to die by the medical fraternity. Her brother had told her, five weeks before, that if she went through an operation she would be brought home in a box. She informed me that she had not taken any medicine at all, that she was reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and had taken just three treatments from a practitioner. She added that Christian Science would heal me also. She then got the Bible and the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and we went through the Lesson-Sermon together before dinner. I then read Science and Health until ten o'clock that evening, went to church next day, and in the evening again read Science and Health. In two weeks my pains and aches had ceased, I could sleep with my windows open, and could eat anything set before me without feeling any uneasiness at all.

In the winter I had an attack of cold and called a practitioner, who gave me absent treatment. I kept at my work but was yielding to error, so one morning I said it would be Christmas before I was well again. I telephoned for some one to take my place, but could not get any one to accept it. I then started to call a practitioner to treat me, and while getting the message the truth came to me that man as God's reflection can do whatever is right and necessary. I took courage right there, and in the afternoon I put all to work. I went to reading with the assistance of the practitioner, and within two hours I was new man altogether. I worked hard, then went home and ate a hearty supper. My wife said, "I thought you were sick." I replied, "That was only error."

I have never taken any medicine from the time I first read Science and Health. I am a Christian Scientist because in an hour of great straits, when in a distressing state of invalidism, Christian Science came to me as a quickening spirit of truth, a beam from the Sun of righteousness "with healing in his wings," answering every question of the doubting reason, healing my body, lifting me from a state of dependence and almost despair into one of joy and hope, into usefulness and the activity for which I had longed. It awakened a deep sense of love for God and humanity, and for the establishment of His kingdom on earth. I now realize more than ever how much we owe to that noble woman, Mrs. Eddy, for the divinely inspired message of Christian Science. It is indeed true that all things are possible with God.
