A congressional investigation may result from the startling facts relating to live stock receipts at the western markets. The governmental figures show that the live stock receipts at the seven principal markets in April, 1912, were greater than for any April since 1907, and furthermore, that the aggregate receipts of live stock at these seven markets for the first four months of this year were greater by far than in the same four months in any year for the past decade. The question which has beer, brought to congressional attention is: Why, in the face of these facts, are the packers putting up prices. and why are they ascribing the unprecedented rise to "shortage of cattle due to scarcity of corn"? The report of the bureau of statistics shows that there is no such shortage.

The federal government has filed a civil anti-trust suit in the federal district court of New York against steamship interests alleged to have monopolized the transportation of passengers and freight between the United States and Brazil. Sweeping charges of granting rebates, fixing arbitrary and unreasonable rates, and entering into conspiracies, combinations, and agreements in violation of the Sherman law are made against several lines.

The state department recently issued some statements showing its interest in the movement which aims to aid farmers to secure loans at a low rate of interest with their crops as security. A joint resolution drafted by Senator Gronna of North Dakota providing for the appointment of a commission to investigate European cooperative credit unions has passed the Senate and is before the House committee on agriculture.
