Words are inadequate to express the great pleasure it...
Words are inadequate to express the great pleasure it affords me to be able to declare publicly my gratitude for the blessings which Christian Science has brought to my family and myself. After suffering for twenty-five years with various diseases, I finally found that four of the ills for which I had been treated during the last ten years of this period were steadily growing worse, and that I was unable to keep up any longer. I had reached man's extremity. I had taken almost every known medicine for these troubles and tried different climates, but to no avail. The physicians did all they could for me, but I continued to grow worse. Some of these diseases were pronounced incurable by physicians. I can assure the reader that I received the very best that materia medica could give me, as my grandfather was one of the foremost and best known doctors in this country. I was brought up among the prominent physicians in this city and the kindness these doctors bestowed upon me I shall never forget. I shall always be grateful for their efforts to help me, but the limit of their ability was finally reached, and it was then I turned to Christian Science and was healed.
Words fail to express how grateful I am for the deliverance from the physical suffering, but I am a great deal more grateful for an almost complete deliverance from one of the worst and most subtle enemies of mankind, and that is, temper. While this error is occasionally expressed on the outside, there lie hidden within jealousy, anger, hatred, pride, cruelty, selfisheness, and many other forms of sinful thoughts, and where such qualities abide there can be no real love, and no health or happiness. I wish to say that I am a thousand times more grateful for the blessings I have received since I began to know our dear heavenly Father aright, which knowledge I gained from the careful study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy.
I also wish to take this opportunity to express my love and gratitude to our beloved Leader for the blessings which have come to me through her teachings and her untiring efforts to help mankind; also to all who have helped me to understand this great truth about God and His eternal, unchanging love and kindness.
Electus Backus Ward, New York, N. Y. [Translated from the German.]
I give this testimony with a feeling of deep gratitude for all I have received through Christian Science. I became acquainted with this wonderful teaching through the healing of my son. Two years ago in January he was taken ill, and after the physician had treated him five weeks for typhus, his condition did not improve. An acquaintance of mine who is a Christian Scientist then happened to call; she at once asked to see the patient, and told me that he would improve right away, which I did not understand at the time, but during the following night there was a change; the fever abated, and he grew more restful. Some new symptoms, however, caused me to be frightened, and I immediately called upon another physician, who told me that the other doctor's diagnosis was wrong, and that we should make up our mind to have an operation performed, as the boy's lungs otherwise would be affected permanently. Thereupon we had the operation performed, and everything went smoothly until four weeks later, when a severe relapse occurred, so that the physicians themselves did not know how things would come out.
In my anxiety I prayed to God, according to the small understanding I then had of Christian Science, and there was an immediate improvement. On the following day the Christian Science friend again treated my son, and thus, with God's help, he recovered, to the surprise of the physicians, who did not know what to make of it. Later on my daughter was taken ill with a violent stomach and bowel disorder and very high fever. I immediately went to the Christian Science practitioner and asked for help, with the result that after two treatments my daughter was well.
My heart is full of gratitude to God, our all-loving Father, and I also think with greatest reverence of our faithful Leader, Mrs. Eddy, through whose spiritual illumination and selfless work the way to God, to Truth and Love, has been reopened to us.
