It is from a heart overflowing with gratitude and love...
It is from a heart overflowing with gratitude and love to God, and to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, that I give my testimony and hope that some poor sufferer by reading it may be led to the truth which healed me. Divine Truth and Love has given me in Christ Jesus renewed courage, and has shown me how to "rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good" (Science and Health, p. 393). Three years study of the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" has taught me that God is ever present, and this knowledge saves from disease and death. One of my greatest blessings is the release from the bondage of fear and depression.
Nearly all of my life I had been a great sufferer. During a period of thirty-five years I was treated by numerous physicians, obtaining only slight relief, although taking medicine constantly, besides electric treatments, etc., which were recommended by my physicians. I underwent several minor operations, and most of the doctors advised a serious operation, but none could promise permanent relief. They admitted that it would be best to postpone this, for there would be other affected organs which they could not leave without attention, and they believed I could not live through such an operation. I was said to have a kidney disease which was very painful, also headaches every few weeks, which sometimes kept me in bed for days and weakened my memory. I was also said to have enlargement of the liver with a bowel disorder, and this continued for twenty-five years.
A number of times my life was despaired of, and the physician upon entering my room would ask the nurse if I was still living. Overhearing such remarks, I determined that though the death sentence had been passed upon me, there was yet some help somewhere, little knowing how divine Love was leading me. I finally consulted two well-known physicians, asking of them a truthful diagnosis of my case. One said he had studied my case very carefully, together with information given him by his father, who had been my physician for nine years prior to his death, and that his conclusion was that I had a malignant growth in an advanced stage, and he told a relative that I could live for a short time only. The other said he had exhausted all medical means, and in a kindly manner told me there was no hope for me, as also there was no hope for himself. He said he had an incurable kidney disease and might pass away at any time, and in a very short while he did. He told me I might live for some time yet, but he was certain I should have to carry my burden to the grave. He advised me to keep away from materia medica, as I had been deceived long enough. He also advised me not to undergo an operation. "Trust in God," were his last words to me. To add to the afflictions mentioned, I had enlargement of the joints, and the suffering which accompanied this disease can be known only by those who have gone through a similar experience.
When Christian Science was presented to me, I was on the verge of insanity. I called on a practitioner for treatment, and asked for relief only, saying I hardly expected to be healed after so many physicians had pronounced my case incurable. She replied that all things are possible to God. I can never forget the renewed hope I received through her kind instructions. I felt like a new creature, and after several treatments I knew positively that my healing would be complete. Instead of fulfilling my physician's prediction that the year 1908 would be my last on earth, it proved to be my best year, as never before had I been so free from pain and mental depression. I am truly thankful to God, and to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for the spiritual uplifting received through the understanding obtained by a careful study of our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures."
I have learned to know and to love the true God through this teaching, and where formerly inharmony and discord prevailed, there is now peace and happiness. I can truthfully say that through this wonderful teaching I was restores to health and happiness, and have been able to demonstrate the truth in my family. My earnest desire is to follow in the footsteps of our Master, who said, "By their fruits ye shall know them." I also wish to express my gratitude for The Christian Science Monitor, which is a great blessing to mankind, and for all the Christian Science literature. God bless Mrs. Eddy, is my prayer.
Mrs. Anna Newman, Chicago, Ill.
