"BY THEIR FRUITS"

IT is always a pleasure to be assured that the good works of Christian Science are not passed by unnoticed, and that these proofs of the truth of Mrs. Eddy's teachings are so plainly written on the face of the times that "he who runs may read." Among the voluntary acknowledgments of the value of this work that is being done in the name of the Master—and the apostle Paul declared "there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved"—is an editorial in the Newburgh (N. Y.) Union, from which we quote as follows:—

Any creed that accomplishes what Christian Science has accomplished must have as its foundation some element of the infinite truth.

It has been within the range of our personal experience to see men lifted out of the slough of despond by Christian Science, and started on the high road to success. You cannot be in the presence of a Christian Scientist five minutes without feeling some of his tremendous enthusiasm,—without feeling that you are in the presence of a man who has something that is worth having. His faith is like the faith of those ancient Christian martyrs who went cheerfully to their deaths in the Old Roman amphitheaters.

The believers in Christian Science number hundreds of thousands—and among them may be found many of our brightest lawyers, doctors, merchants, and newspaper men. It ill beseems any one to denounce Christian Science without a hearing in a country whereof the very corner-stone of its foundation is "religious liberty."

And this is not from the pen of a Christian Scientist.

It is not surprising that such testimony as this is forthcoming, in view of the fact that the works of Christian Science are now so many and so well known. The only surprising thing about the whole matter is that any one should, by denying these good works,—as many self-appointed critics of Christian Science have done,—be willing to write himself down so poor an observer of current events. There is not a city of any size—and hardly a small town, for that matter—in which living witnesses to the healing and redemptive work of Christian Science cannot be found, yet many persons seem willing, when it comes to a discussion of Christian Science, absolutely to close their eyes and ears to the testimony of these people.

It is to the credit of the editor of the Union that he is not only willing to acknowledge the facts which have come under his observation, but that he voluntarily gives credit to the teachings of Mrs. Eddy, because of the "fruits" which they bear.

Archibald McLellan.
