THE LECTURES

PASADENA, CAL.

A very large and attentive audience greeted Prof. Hermann S. Hering of Concord, N. H., at the Christian Science lecture given under the auspices of the local Christian Science church last evening [April 11] in Woodmen Hall. Professor Hering was introduced by C. P. McAllaster, who said in part,—

There is a great deal of popular misconception regarding the place of physical healing in Christian Science teaching, and of the aim and purpose of the lectures which are given from time to time under the auspices of the different Christian Science churches. Healing is not, as many aver, all there is of Christian Science, nor is it the object of these lectures to proselyte. Christian Scientists believe that healing will follow as a natural and inevitable consequence of the right understanding of Jesus' life and teaching, and that in doing this healing they are simply showing their faith by their works.

When John sent to Jesus to inquire, "Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?" according to the account in Luke, Jesus gave no direct reply, but, after performing many miracles of healing in the presence of John's messengers, he said, "Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached." Thus early in his ministry did Jesus acknowledge the transcendent importance of this truth, and later on, what did he give as the test of understanding on the part of those who should follow him.

And now, after nearly two thousand years, we hear the voice of a new evangel calling us back to the old faith: and this we believe to be the message of Christian Science, to bring us back to a correct understanding of the Christ-message: to bring to this age anew the understanding that God is "the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever;" that we are His children as really and as truly as the spiritually-minded fishermen of Galilee in Jesus' time, and that there is not one proof of His love, His omnipotence, and His brooding care, that was vouchsafed to them, that is not equally available to us if we but follow in the footsteps of the Master and spiritually comprehend the Principle which he taught and practised.—Pasadena Star.

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLA.

Frank H. Leonard of Brooklyn lectured before an immense audience at the Overholser last night [April 27]. O. P. Workman introduced the speaker and spoke in part as follows:—

God in His infinite wisdom has used and does use human channels for bringing His messages of truth to mankind. It is worthy to note that truth is always presented at some particular time and by some special person, when some people are ready to receive it. Jesus himself, the greatest demonstrator of truth that the world has ever known, came at a time when a few people were willing to receive the truths he taught; and directly, in proportion to the understanding that they had of his truths, were they given power and dominion over evil, as promised by God Himself. And while about his work among the people in the mountains of Judea and the valleys of Galilee, teaching the truth, uplifting mankind, healing their sins and sickness, bringing them out of the shadow into the sunshine, some people understood in a limited way what he taught. This accounts for the great religious reformations and reformers: the Luthers, the Wesleys, Alexander Campbell, and the present great reformer, Mrs. Eddy. Christian Scientists do not believe that she has brought any new truth to the world, but that in her higher spiritual interpretation of the Scriptures she has disclosed more of the truth.—Oklahoma City Times.

PLYMOUTH, ENG.

A lecture on Christian Science was given by Francis J. Fluno, M.D., in the Corn Exchange, last night [April 20], to a large audience. Major the Hon. W. C. Rowley (London) was the chairman, and the only individual besides the lecturer on the platform. In his opening remarks the chairman said the subject of the lecture was the burning question of the day. A few years ago people talked and thought very little about religion. Now everybody talked about it. They could not go anywhere without hearing Christian Science mentioned, and those who understood it knew that it had come to stay and would do good. Those who were Christian Scientists knew the good it did, that it helped men to lead new and better lives.

ST. LOUIS, MO.

In introducing Judge Septimus J. Hanna at Second Church of Christ, Scientist, May 2, Frank B. Nuderscher, First Reader, spoke in part as follows:—

As Elijah heard the "still small voice" on Horeb's height, and in it recognized the strength and power of God, so today the seeker for a fuller and deeper interpretation of mental and physical phenomena may hear the still small voice of a regenerating, uplifting, and healing religion echoing in our land. As Jesus answered the inquiries of John the Baptist with an affirmative reply, recounting his works instead of referring to his doctrines, so the Christian Scientist of today, as a true and faithful follower of the teachings of Christ, must show through his works that he possesses and reflects the same Mind that was in him. Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Is not Christian Science the still small voice of Truth? The thousands who have been benefited in mind and in body, who have been, as it were, raised from death; the thousands who have been saved from a life of agnosticism or unbelief and an existence without hope or God in the world,—bear grateful testimony to the healing, uplifting, and regenerating influence of Christian Science.

While the civilized world for nineteen centuries has acknowledged an ever-present, all-powerful, and all-wise God, and while we are not presenting to you a new religion, creed, or dogma under a name understood only by searching for its derivation, we are giving to you a spiritual interpretation of the Scriptures as taught and practised eighteen hundred years ago by Christ Jesus and his apostles; truths founded upon a rock, eternal as the heavens, unequivocal in their demands, and which, if faithfully and spiritually followed, will enable each and every one to do the work that Jesus did, and commanded his followers to do. That the prayer of faith is powerful, and that a scientific understanding of God, omnipresent and omnipotent good, does heal the sick and save the sinner, is the premise upon which Christian Science bases its teachings.
