If Christian Science is what its critics believe it to be,...

If Christian Science is what its critics believe it to be, it would have succumbed ere now to the numerous attacks made upon it. It is a subject that appears to disturb many thinking people, who endeavor, with every good intention, to expose what they imagine to be the errors in Mrs. Eddy's book. Christian Science is not Mrs. Eddy's invention. It is a religion of love, and Mrs. Eddy discovered what a religion of love can do for mankind, and has given to the world the fruits of her experiences. It is undoubtedly idealistic, but none the less practical here and now; and all who grasp the spirit of her teaching, and live up to it, cannot fail to be benefited to the degree in which they do this.

What a wonderful example of love Jesus Christ gave to the world! Mrs. Eddy saw the import of that example, and advises Christian Scientists to follow her only as she follows Christ. Was our Master received by mankind? Were his words and works accepted by those he labored to help? The prophecy concerning him was fulfilled—"He is despised and rejected of men." The Bible teaches us that God is Love, and this is the Christian Scientist's God, and he communes daily with Love, in order that he may manifest more and more of that Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus." Christianity may be called the Science of loving. When the scribe came to our Master and asked him, "Which is the first commandment of all?" he answered, "The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these."

On page I of the Christian Science text-book, Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy states: "The prayer that reclaims the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love."
