When in 1901 Christian Science was first brought to...

When in 1901 Christian Science was first brought to my notice, I had been a sufferer for about two years. My case had baffled a number of the medical fraternity in Kansas City, Mo. One of these pronounced it a very serious stomach trouble, and he tried to prove to me conclusively, by reading extracts from different medical works, that he was correct in his diagnosis, but he did not attempt to prescribe for me or give me any encouragement other than to recommend that I change my occupation as conductor on a street car. He insisted on this change, saying that a further aggravation would probably result fatally. I believed that he was perfectly honest in what he told me, as well as the other doctors, who signally failed to give me relief. A few days later I appealed to another doctor, also of Kansas City, and he recommended that I try Christian Science. By the advice of different doctors I had been maintaining a rigid diet for many months, and as a result of this was considerably emaciated. I accepted this good doctor's suggestion and the next day called upon a Christian Science practitioner, who told me that I might eat anything I pleased, and after giving me a mental treatment assured me that there was no necessity for changing my occupation on account of my physical condition.

I straightway purchased a copy of Science and Health, and took not more than four treatments. I have ever since been entirely free from any symptoms of my former enemy. This trouble at the time seemed a great mountain to me, but it was never so large as the mountains of sin which have been overcome in my daily life by the perusal of Science and Health and other writings of our beloved Leader. Mrs. Eddy. I had been an inveterate smoker of cigarettes, used intoxicating liquors too freely, and profanity was my constant companion.

I am now in perfect health, and neither drink, chew, nor smoke. My conversation has been so modified that I do not have to take thought for the presence of ladies before speaking, and the Bible and Science and Health are my daily companions.—W. L. Bousfield, Auburn, Neb.
