It is the old story which I have to tell, and that is, how...
It is the old story which I have to tell, and that is, how Christian Science has brought unnumbered blessings into my life; more than I can describe. One of the first benefits received was the complete healing of heart weakness, from which I had suffered all my life, having been encouraged in the belief that I had inherited it from my mother, who passed away in the night through heart failure on my birthday. The fear these attacks occasioned was very great, and this also has been removed.
Before hearing anything of Christian Science I had a very bad attack of gastritis, which lasted seven weeks. I was attended by a doctor, dieted, and sent to a hydropathic establishment to recover strength. I then looked so ill that friends who met me at the station thought I had gone there to die. Shortly after looking into Christian Science the same trouble attacked me sharply one Saturday. I declined the assistance of materia medica, proposed by my friends, and took ordinary food. I was a little alarmed on finding that the Scientist who had hitherto helped me was away from home, but I realized afterwards that this was the best thing that could have happened, as it made me work for myself to know the allness of God, good, and that there is no room for evil, since good fills all space and is allpowerful. On the strength of my implicit faith in this great truth I rose up and dressed myself, and, although complete recovery was not realized at once, the right thought soon resulted in health. Instead of seven weeks of suffering I was relieved in about forty-six hours, and had I worked rightly at first I need not have suffered at all; but the fear that my friends would execute their threat, and call in a doctor, roused me to activity.
The study of our text-book, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, is a constant source of comfort and inspiration, and as I read and work, much in it that formerly seemed to me to be contradictory becomes perfectly clear. I am not surprised when I hear people say they cannot understand Science and Health on the first reading, because it is a book that requires spiritual discernment. We must come to it with an open mind. Few of us are ready to give up our old beliefs. They seem part of ourselves, and we must be willing to be emptied even of these, however sacred we may hold them, that we may be filled with the right thoughts concerning God and ourselves. We must "taste and see that the Lord is good" before we can realize what perfect peace Science brings into the lives of those who are willing to forsake all and follow in the light.
I have received much help from reading the Sentinel and Journal, which always encourage one to go on working fearlessly. I should therefore like to thank all our contributors for their kindly help through their beautiful articles and verses, knowing that good will be returned to them an hundredfold. — Miss J. Lax, London, England.
