For about twenty-five years I was almost continuously...

For about twenty-five years I was almost continuously addicted to the habit of smoking cigars. By the exercise of will power I was often able to discontinue the habit for periods of time running upward to thirteen months.

I always came back to it, however, as a means of solace in solitude, or as a theoretical sedative for nervous complaints. The appetite was incessant and seemed to demand gratification. I often boasted of my self-control in frequently putting it aside, but I never succeeded in extinguishing the habit.

One afternoon over a year ago, while smoking a cigar and reading "Miscellaneous Writings" by our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, I was suddenly conscious of having no desire for tobacco. The habit and desire were completely destroyed by the truth and love expressed in that little volume. I have never since smoked a cigar nor have I ever desired to do so. I am very grateful for this release, and for the sense of freedom and dominion which the demonstration has brought into my experience.—ERNEST C. MOSES, Chicago, Ill.

When I look back a little more than six years ago, and note the change that has taken place in my life, I know there is no power, less than the divine power, that could possibly bring it about. I was addicted to nearly all the bad habits of the man of the world: using liquor daily, sometimes to excess; smoking ten to fifteen strong cigars daily; swearing at everything that did not please me, and they were many; selfish to a great degree, with a heavy load of fear; suffering with a bad case of stomach trouble and indigestion, which material remedies had failed to heal; unable to make ends meet although I had quite a large practice in dentistry.

How different all is now! I have no desire for liquor or cigars, the swearing habit is gone, I have no fear, am healthy, strong, and happy, surrounded with a healthy, happy family, with plenty and to spare. We have had many beautiful demonstrations in our home, one of which was to me the most beautiful I have ever seen, and it has helped me wonderfully. Three years ago last Fourth of July, I went home at noon-time, and found my little four and a half year old boy lying on a pallet on the floor with a very severe bilious attack. He was so sick that he paid no attention to his older brother and several of his playmates, celebrating with their fireworks, flags, and drums. When lunch was announced he came to the table, remaining but a few seconds; then he returned to his bed, where he lay until six o'clock, when he called for some one to read Science and Health to him. I asked his mother to read to him; she took a seat by his bedside and commenced reading aloud. She had not read more than fifteen minutes, when the little fellow rolled out of bed, saying, "Papa, will you buy me some sky-rockets?" I told him I would, and he immediately asked to be dressed so he could go to the store with me. I bought him a supply of fireworks, and when we returned to the house he joined in play with the other children. By seven o'clock he had eaten a hearty supper and did not seem ever to have been sick.
