At a well-attended Wednesday evening meeting at Second Church of Christ, Winnipeg, the following were some of the testimories given : —
A lady who had been an invalid for a year told of her successful treatment in Science. She also mentioned two encouraging letters she had received; one was from a lady in Stratford, Ontario, who, while visiting in Manitoba, had been relieved through Science treatment of a complication of diseases and was now telling of Christian Science in and around her own town, and others were becoming interested and many had sent for treatment through her recommendation; the other letter was from a lady in the far West who is a Christian Scientist also. She told of an insane woman visiting at her home, and during her stay they gave her Science and Health to read. When she returned home her husband was amazed and delighted to find that his wife, who had been mentally deranged for a year, was now perfectly sane. He, of course, was anxious to know what had cured her, and he was told it was through reading the Christian Science text-book.
A lady spoke of human sympathy. She said even some people who were not Scientists knew it to be a very bad thing. Some people had the notion that Christian Scientists were cold-hearted, and indifferent to the suffering. This opinion is quite wrong. There is no class of people who enjoy so much as do Scientists, to allay pain, to uplift the fallen, and to destroy sin and discord, but they know that in order to do this they must hold in thought harmony and health as the realities, and so by holding all in thought as healthy and harmonious they help to extricate them from their suffering and discord, whereas human sympathy would prolong it and defeat the very object in view.
A gentlmen who thirteen years ago was a hopeless sufferer from asthma and hay fever, said that he had been a druggist, and was thus in a good position to test the efficacy of drugs. He found them, however, of no avail in relieving his suffering, and his case was given up by the doctors. In his extremity he turned to Christian Science and was completely healed, never having had a return of his old troubles. This gentlman said many had the impression that Christian Scientists were antagonistic to the doctors and to all religious denominations. Such was not the case. They believe that the great majority of the doctors are working conscientiously and doing all in their power to relieve suffering, but Christian Science heals mainly those whom the doctors are unable to benefit. He also said that the most successful business men of to-day were those who carried on their business in accordance with Christian Science principles.
Lastly, a gentleman spoke whose father, after reading Science and Health, lost all desire for smoking after doing so for forty years, and whose mother, through studying Science, gave up her glasses, which she had worn for twenty years, and can now read fine print without them. He told of how at times he had to remain at home from school and was confined to a dark room on account of his eyes. Then, just when he had decided to get glasses, he received Science and Health, and was wholly cured of bad eyesight through the understanding obtained by simply reading it. He was also able to demonstrate over severe colds, with which he was frequently attacked, and over other ailments. Christian Science was of inestimable value in his daily life.
