Just ten years ago this month I accepted Christian Science...
Just ten years ago this month I accepted Christian Science and the promise, "Ye shall know the Truth, and the Truth shall make you free," was realized and I was no longer in bondage to fear of pain which had seemed so constant in my back for seven years. After being healed, I felt it was selfish to keep this wonderful truth to myself, so I visited my friends who were in bondage to fear and suffering and told them about Christian Science. Some who have since proved it true, were not then ready to accept it; while others accepted it joyfully at once and were healed.
My father had been an invalid for many years. I knew in my own strength I could do nothing, but I also knew that all things are possible with God, and I at last persuaded him to allow me to treat him.
His affliction, paralysis and spinal trouble, did not seem real to me, as I knew my father was God's perfect idea in reality, and I knew that if I could lose sight of self and realize that God had finished His work and pronounced it good, my father would be healed.
Having been quite helpless for twelve years, I could not help exclaiming often after his healing: "Father, I thank Thee that Thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes," for "a little child" had led him to Truth.
Later error tried to appear real to my mother in the claim of erysipelas. For three weeks she was unconscious apparently. The disease seemed to go from her head to her feet. Many times death seemed to assert itself, but it was always met by Love as Life. After the healing she lost all her hair, but very soon it came in thick and long again. The Christian Science nurse who took care of my mother said that when she was a nurse in the hospital, cases like this never recovered.
In speaking to a physician recently of what Christian Science has done for our family, I asked if he wondered that we believed in it, and he replied: "I do not see how you can believe in anything else."
For seven years my time has been spent in trying to help others to be free from sin, sickness, and death, "not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything as of ourselves, but our sufficiently is of God."
"Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen," and daily I have proved the truth of the article "Angels" in "Miscellaneous Writings."
My prayer is that my daily life may express the gratitude I owe to God and our dear Leader, for the blessings which have been ours since Christian Science changed our home from discord and suffering to harmony and health.
If we are truly grateful to God for the blessings which have come to us through Christian Science, shall we not express it in some way to the one whom God has chosen to reveal the Truth to us?
There are many ways in which we can express our gratitude to her. She has certainly taught us how to keep the First Commandment which she has exemplified in her own life, and if we are forgetting self and seeking God first we shall find opportunities of showing our gratitude.
"By their fruits ye shall know them."
