A Wednesday Evening Meeting

At First Church of Christ, Scientist, I. O. H. Hall, Preston Street, Baltimore, Md., some most interesting testimonies were given Wednesday evening, January 24. The hall was filled with those who know what Christian Science has done for them, as well as many who came to hear and see what this leaven is that seems to be finding its way into every condition of mortal thought, like the "holy waters" pictured in Ezekiel, 47, which, issuing "out from under the threshold of the house eastward" gradually rise and spread until they become a river that "could not be passed over;" and behold, "every thing that liveth, which moveth, whithersoever the rivers shall come, shall live ... for they shall be healed."

After singing hymn 141, the meeting was opened by Edward H. Hammond, C.S.D., First Reader, reading from John 12, then from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker G. Eddy, page 212. After a few introductory remarks, in which he brought out the thought that only through the spiritual interpretation as given in our text-book, Science and Health, can we understand that the Bible is not contradictory, Mr. Hammond announced that the meeting was open for testimonials.

A lady arose and told how she was living where Christian Science was not well known, when a friend loaned her Science and Health. She began reading and was healed of an eye trouble which had manifested itself years before, through vaccination. While reading, a stomach trouble of old standing became very apparent but was soon overcome. She then took the book and read to a friend of hers who was in such suffering on account of trouble with her knee that she felt like taking an overdose of morphine. The reading and talk quieted her, but the physician prevailed upon her to put the leg in a plaster cast. For four weeks this cast was kept on and when removed her leg was useless. Then she asked what she should do. Her friend advised Christian Science treatment; the physician said, "Surgical operation and return to the cast." She refused to undergo any more voluntary suffering and sent for a Christian Scientist to treat her. In six treatments she was healed perfectly. Then her daughter was attacked with typhoid fever .. The doctor predicted a long siege. She told her friend (the speaker) who, though fear seemed to take possession of her, mentally declared the Truth for her own protection; and, to the surprise of the physician, the fever was broken the following day. She began to eat and rapidly got well.

A gentleman said, "The question is often asked will Christian Science help me? God is no respecter of persons. Christ Jesus came to teach us how to live and do our work. Many of you know I have been healed of many troubles: rheumatism, etc. I took up the study of Science and Health just as I would take up mathematics or any other science, with the thought that if it could heal me I wanted to know; and I went at it in earnest. I thought the Truth was there, but I had to work for it to find it. My wife was healed of consumption; my daughter was also healed of various troubles. That showed me that Christian Science was the Truth that maketh free."

A lady said, "This passage from 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures' by Mary Baker G. Eddy, page 563, 'Know thyself, and God will supply the wisdom and the occasion for a victory over evil' has been one of the most helpful to me,—to know myself as taught in Chrisitan Science, know myself spiritually as God's image and likeness. In the old thought I had often heard this expression 'know thyself,' and I thought the more self-knowledge I gained, the more discouraging all appeared, for I saw myself as sinning and sick. But Christian Science has shown me the unreality of these things and our work is to walk in the footsteps of Jesus who, as Science and Health says, 'Beheld the perfect man, who appeared to him, where sinning mortal man appears to us.' "

The next speaker testified as follows: "One year ago I got Science and Health and I never knew how much it has been and is to me until ten days ago. For nine years I suffered each spring from insomnia and nervous prostration. A Christian Scientist healed me. Ten days ago a man stopped at my house who was affected just as I had been. Then I realized from what I had been delivered. Only once since taking up Science and Health have I had a return of the old trouble, and now I am free from it all."

A lady said: "One of the most beautiful things is the light Christian Science throws on the Bible. It shows so plainly how we must follow our Way-shower. One passage: 'The Prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me,' comes to me very often, and always with renewed power. We know that God having all Power, the prince of this world can have no power."

Mr. Hammond spoke of having been in Science seventeen years, and how often he had heard the prophecy that Christian Science would soon die out. It is the Way made known by Jesus Christ. In Science and Health this Way is made plain, and as one reads one finds, as some one has said, "Christian Science is Christianity reduced to a working basis."

Meeting closed with singing hymn 39.
