Interesting Testimonials
In view of the very general interest in Christian Science in this city, engendered by Mr. Kimball's lecture and the sermons preached upon the subject, a Champion man dropped into the meeting of these people on Wednesday evening.
Almost every seat in the church at the corner of Ninth and Santa Fe Streets was full.
The meeting was opened by singing a hymn. This was followed by reading the Ninety-first Psalm and several short selections from the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker G. Eddy. A few moments were devoted to silent prayer and the Lord's Prayer repeated by the entire assembly, when the First Reader announced that the meeting was open, and invited any who had been benefited physically or morally to testify to that fact. It was indeed surprising to hear these testimonials, claiming such wonderful cures after the doctors had failed. The public can judge for themselves in regard to the merit of these testimonials for Christian Science, as we publish below their statements.
A young lady in the rear part of the church rose, and in a clear, firm voice, and her face beaming with sincerity, said, "I had suffered from a cough ever since having the whooping-cough in infancy, and for two years I was under the care of a physician or taking medicine. All this time I was unable to do anything and for some time not able to help myself. One of the most noted physicians in the city said I had consumption and could not possibly live. Two specialists of Kansas City, who made a critical examination of my case, said there was no help for me. At this time my mother witnessed the healing by Christian Science of an infant, said to be dying with pneumonia, and insisted on my trying it. At first I refused, but finally consented and went to the Scientist. When I went for my first treatment I could not speak above a whisper and had not been able to do so for some weeks. When I returned home after my first treatment I could talk in as firm a voice as now. In five treatments I was entirely healed, and since then I have not taken a dose of medicine. My sister, about fourteen years of age, was attacked with St. Vitus' dance, which extended to every muscle of her body. She was taken to the best physicians in town, who gave her no encouragement for even a temporary relief. She was taken to a Scientist, and to-day she is a healthy, happy child."
Promptly, when this speaker was seated, a lady, prominent in the social world of our city, arose, and with a face and tone that gave emphasis to every syllable she spoke, said, "About five years ago, at the earnest solicitation of a friend, I was induced to try Christian Science healing. I had exhausted almost every remedy known to materia medica, had tried the Wier-Mitchell cure, sanitariums, and change of climate; and always without lasting benefit. Physicians told me I could never be well and must never stay in Kansas during the summer on account of the heat. When I went for treatment I had no faith; in fact, I was prejudiced and told the healer so, but she asked me if I believed in God. I told her I did, when she replied that God was the only healer. I began to improve after taking the first treatment, and in six weeks I was perfectly well and have remained so ever since. I have proved that I am not dependent upon climate for health, for when we understand what our true being is —and Christian Science teaches us what it is — we know that God is the only Source of health. The Bible teaches us that God is Life, and that Life is indestructible, harmonious, eternal, and that God is Love."
At the close of this testimonial, a lady in the front of the church arose, and in well-chosen language recited her experience in conquering the mother fear in treating her only child for croup, and by the earnestness of her manner, made an impression on those who listened which will not be forgotten.
This was followed by a lady who, in a quiet, but very earnest manner, said, "It is something over four years since I took my first Christian Science treatment. For some twelve years previous to that time my health was very poor, and I had several physical troubles of a chronic nature, for which I had tried doctors and had taken patent medicines. In fact, it was a rare thing for me to go a week without medicine, and all this brought no substantial relief. Since my first treatment in Christian Science, not one dose of medicine has passed my lips; my physical ills have vanished, and I am perfectly well. I would like to say further that Christian Science has not only restored my health, but has taught me what God is. and what is man's relation to Him. Man's rightful inheritance is dominion over every material condition. Before coming into Science, I was in a state of spiritual darkness. My idea of God was very obscure. In fact, I did not know what I believed; but through the study of 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,' the light has gradually dawned upon me, and enabled me to obtain in some small degree that understanding which leads to perfect day."
Another lady, wife of one of the most prominent business men in Nebraska, said, "It is indeed a satisfaction to know that God is ever present, and not the far away, uncertain help we had believed. I had a strong proof of this some weeks since. I was stricken prostrate with a severe attack of typhoid fever. Christian Science does not admit that fever has to run its course. In one week I had recovered. My case created considerable stir in the boarding house, and there was strong talk of telegraphing to my friends. Little did they realize that I had a friend who was always present, and unfailing in His help."
At this time a well-known business man of upper Commercial Street arose and said, "About a year and a half ago I was severely poisoned in the arm by coming in contact with poison ivy while on a fishing excursion. It be came so swollen and discolored that one of the most prominent surgeons in the city told me that amputation was the only remedy. I had it treated by a Christian Scientist, and the result is I have as sound an arm as any man. In addition to this, my wife was healed of a cough of years' standing, and my children of diphtheria.
This was followed by a lady who has been a resident of the city for eighteen years, who said, "Christian Science, while pursuing its divine mission of leading man nearer to God, is also giving him freedom from sin, sickness, and the discords of material sense. I was healed in Christian Science after fourteen years of suffering, over which medicine and doctors had no control. I had attention from three of the best physicians in the city and one noted specialist from Kansas City, receiving no help, and was finally told that the only relief would be through a surgical operation. I am glad to say that I stand here tonight perfectly well without medicine or knife, but through Christian Science.
This was followed by a gentleman, well known to every citizen of Atchison, who spoke as follows:—
"My conversion to Christian Science followed my second reading of Science and Health. The first reading was far from satisfactory, and I freely said so. A Scientist told me to read again, and I did so, and freedom from the tobacco habit was the result. I had been a slave to this habit for almost forty years. This was followed by a complete physical, as well as a moral, revolution, and I am glad to testify that I am a new man and give Christian Science the credit for it.
"In the light of this experience can there be wonder that I am a Christian Scientist and at all times and in all places willing and glad to give a reason for my faith?
"Is there wonder that I, in common with all Christian Scientists, am not only willing, but glad, to say that I honor and revere, above all other human beings, the one who in this age first demonstrated the truth of Christian Science, and out of her own experience and suffering taught us to weave for ourselves the seamless garment of divine Love that should shield us from the attacks of error, no matter what their source or character?
"Is there wonder that we involuntarily turn to the Rev. Mary Baker Eddy as our counsellor and guide, and give her that most sacred of all names — Mother?"
The hour for closing the meeting having arrived, the First Reader said, "It has been my privilege during the past twelve years of Christian Science work to know of almost every form of sin and disease, both acute and chronic, yielding to Christian Science treatment, and after presiding over these meetings for the past four years, can say that Atchison furnished her share of proof in the way of results of the practical value of this revelation of the Allness of Mind and the nothingness of matter. In fact, the membership, if not the entire attendance of this church, is the result of the healing, saving, and enlightening influence of Christian Science. Christian Scientists can say, 'Shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.' They can bear witness, as of old, to the blind seeing, the deaf hearing, the lame walking, the sinner repenting, the infidel converted, and the spiritually dead awakened. We will close our meeting by singing hymn No. I."
After this there were pleasant greetings among the Scientists and to the strangers present, and the congregation dispersed. — Atchison (Kan.) Champion.
