Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh
As the time of year draws nigh in which we commemorate the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, the greatest teacher of Love the world has ever known, we ofttimes look back over the vista of years and see in though those wise men of the East scanning the heavens for a sign from God.
They read those starry skies as we read a well-loved book, and in those silent watches their minds reached out for higher thoughts, gaining inspiration from look into those windows of Heaven.
Rewarded when they least expected it, one night their Star of Hope appeared in the East. It beckoned them to journey far and to bring their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, those gifts that nothing but self-sacrifice could make their own to give, and lay them at the feet of him whom they had long looked for, their King, the Messiah.
They rose up and obeyed, they travelled long and far to bring him greetings, and they found him in a manger. Did they shrink from worshipping and giving their gifts because, instead of a king with golden sceptre and jeweled crown, with vast armies to subdue, they found but a little babe? No. They trusted; they believed God's voice and God's hand led them to Bethlehem, and their minds were so uplifted by the Spirit of Truth that they laid their gifts in gratitude to welcome one, the King of Love, whose life and works, because of his understanding of God, would make him ruler over the so-called ruler of evil. They hailed him with joy. They bowed their heads. They offered their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, and were satisfied.
To-day, as of old, there are faithful seekers after God watching and longing for the Star of Hope to appear, and for those who have come to Christian Science, that wonderful revelation of divine Love, the truth of God, and realized its blessings, that star has dawned, and following they have found the Christ-Truth, the Impersonal Love, that healing power God-given.
Through the purity, self-sacrifice, and love for God of our beloved Leader and Teacher of Christian Science, Mary Baker G. Eddy, the Truth has been manifested. She has shown us how to gain the understanding of Love that heals the sick, opens the eyes of the sinner, and causes him to find pleasure only in God.
Let us of to-day who have been born anew and have received the great blessings of Christian Science. lay at the feet of Truth the pure gold of a character loyal and true. Let us send forth the sweet incense of a life made rich in loving works, and fulfil with joyful hearts every demand made upon us.
