Chicago Record

At the People's Institute last evening James Monroe McDonald talked upon the use and abuse of surgical operations under the caption, "Horrors of Modern Surgery." He said in part: "Surgery may be divided into conservative and destructive surgery. One is wise and humane, the other brutal and criminal. The field of true surgery is the field of traumatic lesions. The fractured bone, the dislocated joint, the lacerated tissue, these may be operated upon, because they are in the line of conservative surgery. Beyond this surgical science should not go.
