A Wednesday Evening Meeting
Kansas City Times
Every Wednesday night in the Christian Science churches of this city members gather in accordance with the rules of the Mother Church. Last week and the week before I attended these services for the purpose of giving to the readers of the Times accurate knowledge of the tenets the Christian Scientists propound and the results of their belief when put into practice in the actual experiences of daily life. I attended the First Church of Christ, Scientist, at Forest Avenue and Ninth Street. Both evenings the church was filled with a large, earnest, and devout audience. It is doubtful if there is a Protestant church in Kansas City that had a larger attendance at prayer meeting that night. The church is one of the handsomest and has the most elaborate appointments of any church in Kansas City.
The first man to tell what Christian Science had done for him related the following experience :—
About three years ago I was afflicted with heart trouble and under the care of a physician. He called in several other physicians and they held a consultation and decided that they could do no more for me, that my case was helpless. At that time all my friends and relatives thought that nothing could be done for me, and the doctors told me not to attempt any work, as it would hasten my death.
"A neighbor who had been healed by a Christian Scientist told me of his experience. He called a healer, who came to see me for two weeks, and I felt better. The second morning after he came I went to church. I came back and felt better that afternoon. Still the healer did not think I was progressing rapidly enough toward complete health, and said that I was certainly taking medicine also, as there was something inimical to the treatment. I told him I had thrown away my medicine bottles, and that I was not taking any medicine. 'You may not be doing it consciously,' said he, 'but if not consciously, you are taking something unconsciously.' I tried to recollect every act from the time I had been treated. I remembered that I had been drinking some mineral water. My wife was under the care of doctors and they had advised this water, and, of course, I thought it was a good thing. I was taking this water unconsciously as a medicine. I continued to drink it after the healing and something was not right. The gentleman who was treating me, when I told him of the mineral water taken as medicine, said, 'That is just it. I knew there was something you were taking that was preventing the work of faith. You must stop drinking this water as medicine if you wish to be healed.'
"When I discovered that I was taking this mineral water as medicine I discarded it, and I was healed perfectly, and have been well ever since."
A woman arose and said, "About five years ago Christian Science found me a confirmed invalid. I had tried every remedy known to materia medica, and physicians pronounced my case hopeless. I was actually starving to death, mentally and physically. I was asked three years before to try Christian Science, but refused. Some of my friends prevailed upon me and I was induced to try. I was healed in six weeks."
A venerable man gave his experience as follows: "I had been a sufferer for thirty years and I tried Christian Science. I was suffering intensely. In about a week I was entirely healed and I have been well ever since."
A young woman related the following :—
"A demonstration in my daily life comes to mind. A few weeks since my little girl was playing in the yard with several companions. She came rushing into the house about six o'clock, overcome with heat and suffering with headache. 'Treatment, treatment, mamma,' she cried, and treatment was all she would say. I immediately sat down and realized Truth for her for a few minutes. We had company at dinner that evening and I left the child. When I had sat down to the table I heard a light footfall on the stairs, and the child came joyously running into the room, bright and pain in her head was gone. She wanted her dinner then, and she was perfectly well. Such a complete change in so short a time."
The next speaker, who had the appearance of having been a traveling man, gave an instance of a demonstration which had cured an aggravated case of appendicitis. "I went to California, where my friend who was suffering from appendicitis resided," said he. "I found him suffering intensely. He had had one operation performed, but it had not accomplished anything and he was about determined, on the advice of his physician, to take another. The physician said that he probably would not survive the operation, but it gave the only chance for his life. I said to him that I could give him a remedy which would cure him. He desired to know what it was and I said, 'Christian Science.' He became interested and began to question me. I talked with him quite an hour.
"During the conversation he promised me to go to a healer. I left him that way after I had made the remark not to take any medicine, and I would try to see what I could do. He was given absent treatment by a healer, and when I went back on the third day, the swelling had all disappeared, and in three days he was eating any kind of food he wished. Through these demonstrations he became interested, and since reading Science and Health he thinks there is nothing like Christian Science."
A stalwart y'oung man, who is one of the city's prosperous dentists, was the next witness for Christian Science. He said, "Christian Science has done so much for me in so many Ways that whenever I think of giving a testimonial I never know where to begin. When I think of where it found me three years ago, how it lifted me out of darkness and gave me an entirely new idea of life and kept me in such a happy frame of mind, I say it is hard for me to tell what Christian Science has done for me, because it has done everything. We have had in our family healings of every sort and condition, and yet at the same time we have never been healthier than the three years we have been living according to Christian Science. I have noticed the benefits to be derived from Christian Science in its application to my business, that of dentistry. I believe there is no question but that Christian Science dentistry is going to do more for the alleviation of pain in the dental chair than any other thing ever brought before the dental profession. When treatment has been made by a Scientist all pain is entirely removed and all fear of what might be suffered is entirely removed, and, as I say, a greater understanding of its application to dentistry is going to do more for dentistry than anything else, than all the systems, machines, and treatises that the dental profession has devised. I look forward to the time when dentists will take up the study of Christian Science, and not go into the profession as they are now, driving in the dark, and will do away with the machine and an?esthetic methods of the present. The remedy is so simple, if they will only take it up and apply it to the profession."
An elderly lady then arose and bore witness to the dentist's statement. She said a few weeks since she had ten teeth extracted without a particle of pain. "I had received treatment," said she, "as the dentist preferred that some one assist me. As the gentleman says who preceded me, all fear was removed, and I sat down in the dental chair and had ten teeth extracted in twenty minutes without any pain. I had had previous experience in having teeth pulled without the assistance of treatment, and I had to receive the attention of two physicians and suffered intensely, and I know that Christian Science is the best remedy if you are going to have teeth extracted."
Another woman told the experience of a young married woman. Her case was pronounced hopeless, and her mother and friends grieved, as they thought she would die and leave her young baby. The witness saw her again after a few months and she was perfectly well, and said that Christian Science cured her. The young woman said that before trying Christian Science she had internal abscesses and had had seven operations performed. She was again afflicted with an abscess, and her parents felt that another operation was necessary. The mother went to the doctor and asked him what hope he could give her. He said: "I can give her no hope. If this was my daughter I wouldn't ask her to have that operation performed. If she insisted upon it she might have it, as there might be a chance for her life. I see little hope for her with or without it," and she told him she had been advised to try Christian Science, and he replied that he would be willing to try anything that would give him the slightest hope. "There is no hope for her in medicine that I can see," said he. So they tried Christian Science, and in a short time she was out and going about as a well and healthy woman. She had spent thousands of dollars on materia medica, and Christian Science cost her only fifty-eight dollars, and she is now entirely well. If anything gets the matter with her she runs to her Science and Health as other people do to their medicine.
A Scientist from Chicago was in the audience and he participated in the meeting as follows: "I live in Chicago and Christian Science is as good there as it is here. I am glad to say that in the United States to-night there are thousands of Christian Scientists who are giving testimony for Truth, and who have gathered to hear and tell about Christian Science.
Three years ago I was living in this city. I was sixty years old, as we reckon things. I thought my time had come to die. I had been doctored, I had been ministered all these years. I went to Christian Science, and in a few days, three or four, I was relieved of physical suffering to a great extent and was made to rejoice. Since that time I have not used tobacco, smoked, nor chewed, nor drank. Christian Science cured me of these habits. I have not used profane language, as I formerly did, and Science has cured me of all evils of the flesh. Neither have patronized the doctors nor the drug stores. I feel as if it is my duty to tell these things. I want everybody to come to Christian Science. It seems to me as if I want to ask everybody to come and try. You will find that Christian Science will heal you of your aches and pains. It will heal you who think you are sick. I say to you who are under the bondage of evil habits and the appetites, if you will come to Christian Science you will find relief. You will find that Christian Science will relieve you of all these troubles. You will find Christian Scientists the best people on the face of the earth. They are trying to do right because it is right. You must experience Christian Science if you would understand. You will be proud to think you are a Christian Scientist, proud to tell everybody you are a Christian Scientist. —Kansas City Times.
