If a thought keeps whispering, “Yeah, yeah, I know that already” as you’re seeking fresh spiritual inspiration, maybe that’s a nudge to take a closer look at one of Mary Baker Eddy’s poems, titled “Communion Hymn.” It asks, “Felt ye the power of the Word?” (Poems, p. 75). This can point to getting past an intellectualism often associated with spiritual and religious thought to consistently feeling love, joy, and community.
We may not always identify this desire to feel, instead of just know, as reaching for the power of divine Love—for the gospel message that Jesus taught. And yet, as we grow beyond “I know that” to “Oh, God is helping me feel what that means!” our yearning to be comforted and loved expands into a desire and ability to comfort others and show them God’s love. What a gift.
