TeenConnect: Your Healings

Being afraid of spiders is a pretty common fear, but even scarier for me was waking up with a spider bite. This happened one morning when I woke up in my dorm room just like any other day. However, this time I woke up with a suspicious bite—though I didn’t know that at first.

It was pretty early in the morning, and I was just preparing to do my workout. However, when I stepped out of bed, I felt this pain I couldn’t identify. Since it didn’t seem to come from anywhere, I went to the gym anyway and got my workout done. When I came back from the gym, however, it was light enough that I saw the bite for the first time.

I was scared, and it got to the point where the bite was all I could think about. I went through the school day as I normally do, but the pain grew increasingly worse. At one point, some of my friends noticed that my leg was swollen and red. They began to talk about it. They were convinced that I needed to get the venom out.

At first I went along with that, but soon I was fed up and realized I was going about this all wrong. While it seemed like there was something bad in my leg that I had to get out, I realized that was a misperception. What needed to be removed was the mistaken belief that there was anything in God’s creation that could harm me.

Our all-loving Father-Mother couldn’t create a threatening idea.

After the school day was over, I got excused from my sports practice and went to my house parent in my dorm to ask him if we could pray together. We read that week’s Christian Science Bible Lesson, and one of the passages from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures was so helpful for my situation. It said, “All of God’s creatures, moving in the harmony of Science, are harmless, useful, indestructible” (Mary Baker Eddy, p. 514). What I understood from this was that in reality, all God’s creatures were created to express goodness, because God, the creator of all, is good. I knew that even the spider, which so many people seem to be afraid of, wasn’t created to be poisonous or bad; the belief that a spider is something to be feared is a mistaken view of God’s ideas. I thought about this further and realized that because God is good, He could never make anything that could afflict us. Our all-loving Father-Mother couldn’t create a threatening idea. Throughout the rest of the day I held to the truth that God does not afflict and neither can anything in His creation.

That night I went to bed feeling completely peaceful, and I woke up the next morning with no sign of the spider bite. Through prayer, I’d realized how safe and secure I am in God’s kingdom.

This healing has been helpful to me because I can see more clearly now how to pray effectively. At first, with the spider bite, I was too focused on trying to get rid of the venom and its effects. But I soon realized that giving it so much attention was just reinforcing the misperception that I could be harmed. I learned that a better place to start is by knowing God’s goodness and understanding that good is the only power. That’s what healed me.
