The 'game' of life
When I played baseball in school, our coach often said, “Keep your head out of the stands!”—that is, don’t let boos or cheers distract you.
Baseball coaches have always urged players to stay with the game on the field. That’s why an ace pitcher walks to the dugout with his head down, ignoring a standing ovation after striking out a top hitter. That’s why you don’t see joyous chest bumps celebrating a double play, or an outfielder doing a victory dance after making a leaping catch.
Selfless play in sports, or any other activity, echoes the Bible. St. Paul wrote, “Love … does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud” (I Corinthians 13:4, New International Version).
