Communications that bless

One morning in a grocery store in France I saw a woman in trouble. Her lips pursed and her eyes narrowed; she was trying to figure out how to get hold of a bottle of shampoo on the top shelf. Several customers passed her by, but she didn’t ask for help. Now, my French is not great, but I did my best and asked her, “Je puis aider vous?” She looked around, startled, and then smiled. “Oui. Merci, monsieur.”

I grabbed the bottle and handed it to her. She couldn’t stop thanking me. I continued shopping and smiled to myself. It wasn’t so much that I had helped her get the product she needed. It was that God’s communication had reached both of us. For me, it had come through the idea to speak and help; for her, it had come through accepting the assistance she needed.

“The intercommunication is always from God to His idea, man,” is how Mary Baker Eddy puts it (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 284). Even in our simplest daily experiences, God’s ideas come in whatever form is most meaningful to each of us, and the result is always a blessing.
