The dawning of eternal life

I was with a group searching for an Umbrella bird on the Napo River in Ecuador. We got up in the dark, and our guides paddled for hours to arrive at the roosting location. As the sun rose, birds began singing. Howler monkeys roared. Insects buzzed, and we saw a group of Umbrella birds silhouetted against the brightening sky. Looking at these remarkable creatures in a primeval setting was a remarkable experience. The dawn brought new views of God’s wonders.
The Bible relates the dawn to revealing new views of God and God’s creation. “We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts” (II Peter 1:19). Here the day represents the dawning of spiritual clarity or revelation. The light that shines in our heart and mind is the Christ, Truth, or spiritual message from God illuminating our thoughts.
The dark place may be fear or spiritual ignorance, hurt feelings or disappointment. Such dark states of thought disappear with the coming of spiritual inspiration as certainly as dark disappears before the dawn. And where nothing was seen before or merely shadows and vague shapes, the light reveals ever-clearer views of specific spiritual ideas.
