Reflections on a street scene

Looking out my office window one day, I saw two very different scenes.

One involved a man in tattered clothing, bent over, moving his hands above the sidewalk in circular motions. His pants and overcoat were badly torn, and his hair bedraggled.

Just on the other side of a concrete wall, there was a second scene, involving merriment and conversation. Guests at a local Chamber of Commerce reception had spilled out into the courtyard, and a businessman was making the rounds, talking with others.
