My journey home

There I was, surrounded by the exotic grandeur of New Delhi, excited to study the region and the culture with an open mind.

And then the homesickness kicked in.

The funny thing was, at that point in my life I didn’t feel like I knew where my home even was. Having spent the past four years either at college, at camp, or traveling during my breaks, I was used to being “abroad” and away from my family. And now, I was feeling pretty certain that it wasn’t possible to feel at home in India. The impressions of excitement and grandeur were replaced by a picture of a dirty, crowded, and chaotic city. New Delhi was huge—especially to a girl who’d grown up in the American Midwest. Suddenly, I wanted to be anywhere but there!
