"You're being mothered right now"

As I was walking down a Boston street about two years ago, the big dome of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, came into view, and the thought suddenly occurred to me, “I’ve been healed of grief.”

This was several years after my mom had passed on, and I realized that, through a series of inspirations and divinely comforting thoughts, I had indeed been totally healed. As I look back on the mental journey that got me to that point, three moments stand out.

First, on a Mother’s Day about six months prior, I had been sitting in a service at The Mother Church. The thought came, “You’re being mothered right now.” I realized we can take great comfort in the fact that our Father-Mother God cares for us always–and that the source of all the mothering (and fathering) we receive is God, not our biological parents. Therefore, we can expect maternal comfort from any number of people in our lives.
