More than sheer luck

As I crouched on the soggy tundra under a persistent drizzle, trying to stow a few things in my overstuffed backpack, I was grateful. Grateful for coming to Alaska, for sharing this experience with a longtime friend, and for setting foot on this country’s last great frontier.

But perhaps even more than that, I was grateful for the huge sense of joy and adventure that had marked my travels so far. Each morning my friend and I had committed ourselves to reading aloud and praying with the ideas in the Weekly Bible Lesson. It was an indispensable tool for setting the tone to our day, and this particular morning was no exception.

A few days prior we’d been the only backpackers to get off the bus at our designated drop-off point—a roughly five-hour drive into Denali National Park. The rain had deterred the other solo hikers from venturing into the wilderness, but we were resolved not to let it affect a long anticipated and well-planned-for trip.
