My gratitude for the efficacy of the healing power of Christian Science goes beyond words. I was fully and completely healed of a long-standing depression through the power of prayer and the spiritual truths learned in Christian Science.
Over a period of thirty years I frequently found myself sad and afraid. I often had a Christian Science practitioner pray for me, and I prayed for myself as well. I knew from my dad and a sibling’s experience that this was a challenge believed to be hereditary.
During the Christmas holiday one year, with fear and sadness escalating, spiritual intuition guided me to ask a friend, who was listed as a Christian Science practitioner in The Christian Science Journal, for Christian Science treatment. I had never spoken to her about this problem before. She joyously agreed to take the case, and over the next two and a half years we worked together on a daily basis. Some days we spoke or texted several times. She never gave up and always responded to my fear with a powerful truth, sharing passages from the Bible or Mrs. Eddy’s writings.
Among the many spiritual lessons and truths I gleaned through this prayerful work was a clearer sense of my spiritual identity. Regardless of what our human circumstances argue, our spiritual and unending perfection and our unique niche in life is a forever-promise—and reality—from God, divine Love. Fear, which at times was extreme, was replaced by a knowledge of the joy that is always ours when we get a glimpse of our unending and pure relation to our Father-Mother God.
I learned to pray for myself and be specific about facing down the erroneous thoughts that would bombard me—especially on weekends when my schedule wasn’t busy or when I was alone. During this time of spiritual growth, I was confronted with other challenges. My professional work was very difficult, and a relative became very angry with family members. The only way I kept going was through the practice of Christian Science.
As the healing work progressed, I was able to start job hunting, prepare for a move, support my family, and keep up my professional work and church responsibilities. Church was a vital element of this healing, and teaching Sunday School was a very special hour.
My office was near a Christian Science Reading Room, and this was a haven. The hymns in the Christian Science Hymnal continue to be a great source of joy. Keeping a list of things I was grateful for, however small, was a daily support, which I have continued. The healing was complete in the late summer of 2014.
I share this experience because it is a proof that God’s healing all-power triumphs over even the most aggressive material suggestions. I’ve learned that time is not a factor, and that deep, spiritual joy is a gift we all have from our Father-Mother God.
