When we take our difficulties to God, we can be sure of just settlement of our affairs. The Psalmist assures us: "For ever, O Lord, thy word is settled in heaven." Ps. 119:89. Forever includes now. So we don't have to wait into the far-off future to be governed by the equity of divine law. God's Word is already established.

The deliverance that came to the children of Israel in their exodus from slavery is recalled throughout later Scriptures as a ringing triumph of good over evil. To this day, students of the Bible are inspired and encouraged by the events connected with that God-directed journey. In our own time, sickness, disease—disabilities of any sort—are forms of bondage from which divine law frees us.

The weight of opinion is heavy on the side of dealing with physical problems solely through material means. Our Master, Christ Jesus, healed every kind of disease through the power of God alone. He insisted that what he taught and the way he healed were not based on something he himself had formulated, but that they came to him from God. He declared, "The words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works." John 14:10.

Mrs. Eddy's discovery brought her release from years of semi-invalidism. She recognised that this experience of healing was not miraculous but in accordance with divine laws—the same laws that Christ Jesus had utilized. These laws had been perceived and applied, in some measure, by Moses, by Old Testament prophets such as Elijah and Elisha, and by the apostles, though no one has ever equaled Christ Jesus' understanding and application of them.

Mrs. Eddy, following our Master's example, shared with others the truth she had received. She writes in Science and Health, the Christian Science textbook: "I saw before me the sick, wearing out years of servitude to an unreal master in the belief that the body governed them, rather than Mind.

"The lame, the deaf, the dumb, the blind, the sick, the sensual, the sinner, I wished to save from the slavery of their own beliefs and from the educational systems of the Pharaohs, who to-day, as of yore, hold the children of Israel in bondage." Science and Health, p. 226.

One's recognition that freedom from slavery to sickness and disability comes through correcting his own belief in their reality is a key point to his success in metaphysical healing. The ailment or disability is not primarily a condition of the body, but something that appears to have originated in thought. Fear, ignorance, and sin project on the body their mistaken beliefs.

Fear has its roots in ignorance—ignorance of God and of man's relationship of Him. And fear yields as we begin to understand God's power—that God is not only the greatest power, He is the only power. God is Love, infinite good, who in His tender ever-presence preserves man, His beloved child, constantly. We can be confident of our safety when we're leaning on divine Love.

The book of Isaiah abounds with assurances of God's love. To go through that book and mark passages that deal with these assurances will provide us a wonderful reminder when fear knocks at our door.

Just as any mistake can be corrected by truth, mistaken beliefs of man's vulnerability to sickness and sin can be corrected by the truth of God and man. Our actual identity is the reflection of God, and this true selfhood, spiritual man, is governed by the laws of God. The Bible and Science and Health reveal to us these laws, which will deliver us from bondage to poor health. Faithfully studying these textbooks and striving to live the precepts they teach will bring us closer to God, and we will find improved health.

But the one who has just begun his study of these laws doesn't have to wait until he is an advanced student of Christian Science to have the healings he seeks. The willingness to accept the basic precepts of the perfection of God, man's consequent perfection as God's likeness, and the illusory nature of matter and evil can bring wonderful freedom right away. Science and Health states: "The Science of being reveals man as perfect, even as the Father is perfect, because the Soul, or Mind, of the spiritual man is God, the divine Principle of all being, and because this real man is governed by Soul instead of sense, by the law of Spirit, not by the so-called laws of matter." Ibid., p. 302.

Because God is good, His likeness, man, cannot be sick or disabled. Since God is the only creator, disease and suffering, deafness, blindness, and lameness, were never made. And the belief in them or in material laws to regulate them can be healed through the action of God's law. Science and Health urges, "Let us banish sickness as an outlaw, and abide by the rule of perpetual harmony,—God's law." Ibid., p. 381.

God's law, God's Word, is "settled in heaven." It is the supreme authority on earth as well, and will deliver us from sickness and disability. It's the law of freedom that brings peace and harmony, including health, to you and me.
