How I Found Christian Scinece

‘Her words were like a balm to me’

From the August 19, 2019 issue of the Christian Science Sentinel

One day many years ago, I was sitting in the waiting room of a clinic when a very dear friend approached me and warmly greeted me. We had known each other since childhood, but in later years had moved away and no longer saw each other. My friend owned an employment agency, and she had come to see one of the doctors who needed an employee. I was very happy to see her, and when she asked me how I was, I said, “Not well.” I was at the clinic for medical treatment for my two youngest children (six and eleven years old). I felt sad and distressed, and was very fearful for my children’s health. I also suffered from frequent migraine headaches, despite taking many different types of painkillers.

While my friend and I waited, she told me she was studying something very interesting—Christian Science. She said it had healed her completely of chronic bronchitis, from which she had always suffered. I asked her where I could start studying Christian Science. She told me it is studied from two books: the Bible, and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. And my friend kindly offered to arrange a meeting for me with the lady who was helping her understand Christian Science and had prayed with her for healing.

When I met and talked with this sweet woman, it was as though my thought had been illumined. At the time I was involved in a religion that viewed God as punishing and unforgiving. I told her I was afraid of ever offending such an unloving God and being punished. She assured me very lovingly that there was only one God, who is all-loving. He embraced the whole universe with love. We spent the whole afternoon together talking, and it did me a lot of good. Her words were like a balm to me. I left her home feeling full of joy.

I later learned that this lady was a Christian Science practitioner, one who dedicates her life to helping people through prayer. She gave me a Bible, a copy of Science and Health, and a Christian Science Quarterly so I could study the weekly Christian Science Bible Lessons. I began studying both books and the Lessons with great enthusiasm.

When I had questions about something I had read, I would call the practitioner, and she always answered me with a lot of patience and love. During this time I forgot to attend my usual church because I was so engrossed in studying Christian Science.

A couple of weeks or so after my visit with the practitioner, I realized I hadn’t had any headaches. I felt great joy! I had completely forgotten about the painkillers; I no longer needed them. I was astonished.

After this healing, I began attending the Christian Science church services that the practitioner was holding in her home, since there were no local Churches of Christ, Scientist, in my city at the time. During the services, I felt such peace.

As I understood more and more the blessed truths found in Science and Health, I became less fearful for my children’s health and more trusting in divine Love’s care for them. I also saw that God created man spiritually. On page 468 of Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy tells us: “There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all. Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error. Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal. Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual.” I have turned to this “scientific statement of being” many times in prayer and been healed of many things, including burns, flu symptoms, a sprained foot, and the painful effects of a blow to the head from a bottle that fell from a high shelf as I tried to reach it.

I am still a part of that group of Christian Scientists that began meeting years ago in the practitioner’s home. We have since become a Christian Science Society (in Mendoza, Argentina) and moved to a more public location.

I continue to feel immense gratitude to my Father-Mother God; to my Way-shower, Christ Jesus; and to Mary Baker Eddy, who through her writings enabled me to know the one, true God—divine Love.
