Love reaches us

From the December 22, 2014 issue of the Christian Science Sentinel

Mary Baker Eddy writes in her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, “If the Scientist reaches his patient through divine Love, the healing work will be accomplished at one visit, and the disease will vanish into its native nothingness like dew before the morning sunshine” (p. 365). This paragraph has the marginal heading “Speedy healing.”

One of the subtle, and often overlooked, suggestions is that we, a loved one, or a patient we have been called upon to help through Christian Science treatment, cannot be reached through divine Love. We may have even heard ourselves say at some low point, “I just can’t feel it!” Or the physical evidence may make us fearful that we’re beyond the touch of divine Love.

I was taken aback by this suggestion late one evening when the phone rang. A mother, embracing her infant, told me that she, her daughter, and her husband were staying at a hotel for a conference. The sweet child had a painful ear, and all of them were feeling stressed. They called me as a Christian Science practitioner to pray for them.

Christ, the true idea of Love, dispels the illusion of a distance between God and man.

I began quietly but emphatically to voice to the mother spiritually scientific truths about her daughter. This included the fact that God, ever-present Spirit, is the only cause. God, Principle, was the protecting Father and tender, loving Mother of this child. Since Spirit’s laws were governing everything and Spirit was filling all space, there could be no place for infection, inflammation, or pain. The child was not a mortal but was the perfect, spiritual, and immortal idea of the all-knowing Parent, Mind. There was no room for fear to be anywhere in consciousness—not the parents’ or the child’s.

I voiced these truths, but didn’t seem to be connecting. That was when something deeply important to healing became clear to me.

I had been thinking for months about the allness of Love and how it must be the essence of all being. The Bible states, “God is love” (I John 4:8). Since God is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient, this must mean that Love is all-powerful, fills all space, and is all-knowing. Love is the substance of all being and is the motivating force of all action and volition. Man, as God’s idea, has nothing to do with matter, but instead is the outcome, or emanation, of Love. Mrs. Eddy puts it succinctly in a poem when she writes, “For Love alone is Life” (Poems, p. 7).

Christ Jesus’ healing works proved the reality of being, the Science of Love, and showed us the nature of Love. In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes, “Jesus aided in reconciling man to God by giving man a truer sense of Love, the divine Principle of Jesus’ teachings, and this truer sense of Love redeems man from the law of matter, sin, and death by the law of Spirit,—the law of divine Love” (p. 19). Through stories, or parables, Jesus showed his followers how Love reaches out to those in need. For example, he talked about the shepherd who left 99 sheep and went to find the one that was lost (see Matthew 18:12, 13).

To “reach out” implies a gap, or separation, and illustrates the effect of Love in human consciousness and experience. In pondering this, I realized that the reason Love can reach us is a divinely scientific one. And it is this: that because man is the idea of Love, there is no gap or gulf between Love and man. In spiritual reality, no such separation ever existed. Christ, the true idea of Love, dispels the illusion of a distance between God and man. Man, the complete expression of God, can feel and know nothing but what Love knows and feels.

The only place to truly find each of us as His idea is in the all-encompassing consciousness of Love. Not feeling the all-embrace of Love is like saying that we could be swimming in the ocean and not feeling the water. Of course we feel the water! We are in the middle of it. But we are actually even closer to Love than that. We are one with Love as Love’s own expression of itself. The fact that man is at one with Love eliminates the sense of our being a mortal who is separate from Love and eliminates all the drama that goes with that scene, including a diseased condition, an emotional hurt, despair, wrongdoing, and even the fear of death.

Each of us has an inseparable relationship to Love.

No matter how convincing it may claim to be, no human discord is real; therefore, it cannot create a breach between eternal Love and its child. It is scientifically impossible. No negative attitude, stress, rebellion, pressure, agnostic thought, or hypnotic details of a human difficulty can have reality. Therefore they cannot put a barrier between Love and its idea, man, or change the spiritual fact that Love and man are one. It is a mortal sense of things that would have us believe someone is lost or is in a never-ending struggle. The scientific fact is that divine Love is already there, holding its idea safe in Love’s harmony.

As I was praying for the child, all these thoughts came together much faster than I can recount them now. I knew then that the scientific fact was that divine Love and this child were inseparable. There was no gap. I said to the mother, “Love is reaching her.” Responding to this truth, the mother said to the child, very quietly and with confidence, “You are OK.” In the next moment, the little one was asleep in her arms. There were no more issues, no side effects. It was a speedy healing.

It’s good to know that we are embraced in the infinite ocean of Love, and to let ourselves truly feel God’s love. There are positive and beautiful effects from this kind of prayer, which eliminates the belief that there is a gap between Love and us. One of them is that we find ourselves more naturally expressing God’s love.

Each of us has an inseparable relationship to Love. Becoming conscious of our oneness with Love as Love’s infinite idea, we can feel the liberating energy, the tender mercy, the strength and power of the operating Principle of the universe, omnipotent Love. Love is the very essence of life, and Love is forever reaching us, because we are all embraced in divine Love right now.
