A 'calm, clear thought' brought healing

From the April 12, 2004 issue of the Christian Science Sentinel

My introduction to the spiritual healing explained in Science and Health seemed like a "light on the road" experience to me. Newly wed, still in college, and searching for the truth about my relationship to God, I first learned of Christian Science when my mother-in-law was diagnosed at the Mayo Clinic with Lou Gehrig's disease. After hearing someone mention Christian Science, she sought healing through prayer, and as a result my husband had also become interested in the religion. Incidentally, she was completely healed, and was with us for another 25 years.

After months of resisting my husband's enthusiasm, I agreed to visit a Christian Science practitioner with him. That visit stirred my questions on what I had a right to know about God.

Two weeks later on a vacation to New Orleans, I was stricken with what we later determined was most likely food poisoning from a street vendor's food. A relative's premed pathology textbook listed each one of the symptoms I had experienced on a page describing severe food poisoning that could be fatal.

My husband carried me in a collapsed state to the hotel bed. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, he asked if I wanted to call a doctor or to try Christian Science. From the severity of my symptoms, I wasn't sure there was time for someone to come.

At that point, he began reading to me out loud from Science and Health. I don't remember the words he read. What I do remember is the calm, clear thought that broke through my suffering: "This is the truth you have been searching for." Within just a few moments, every symptom I had been experiencing left completely. There was no period of recuperation. I knew that somehow I'd had an experience with God—and I wanted to understand it.

When we got home, we immediately began studying the Bible and Science and Health. This marked the end of our reliance on medicine for healing. We could write books describing the healings that have come through prayer to our five children and to our own lives since that eventful day in New Orleans.

Science and Health has rewarded my desire to intelligently trust what the Bible promises concerning God's love and healing power. It has helped me feel His presence. These lines from a hymn capture the preciousness of that early healing to me: "Through clouds of doubt and creeds of fear / A light is breaking, calm and clear" (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 238).
