Hearing restored

From the November 5, 2012 issue of the Christian Science Sentinel

I have had a number of very quick and convincing healings during my over five decades of studying and practicing the principles of Christian Science.

One of them involved an almost complete loss of hearing in both ears. When growing up, I’d had quick healings of earaches by gaining a realization through prayer that hearing as well as seeing were really spiritual concepts that have their source, integrity, and permanency in God, our divine Creator.

But this situation seemed much more stubborn, serious, and frightening—and, even with my prayer, it wasn’t getting better.

It got to the point that I would be sitting around the dinner table with my family, and I could barely hear them. It was as if they were whispering.

One day, feeling that this was too much, I excused myself and went upstairs to call a practitioner of Christian Science healing for prayerful help in resolving this. Experience has shown me that when a problem is particularly challenging and unyielding, it’s right, normal, and fruitful to ask for that extra prayerful support from another. That solid spiritual support lifts us to a higher understanding of perfect God and to our eternal oneness with Him. And that understanding brings comfort and healing.

I explained my situation to the practitioner. Pretty much all I was able to hear was, “I’ll help you.” And then, after hanging up the phone, much to my gratitude (and I must admit, amazement!) my ears started clearing up. Within not more than five minutes, I had complete hearing restored in both ears. What a joy!

I know it may sound like a miracle or unexplainable to someone who’s not familiar with Christian Science. But I had seen many evidences of such quick healings in my parents’ lives and in the lives of some of my friends who are Christian Scientists. In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy explains that a miracle is “that which is divinely natural, but must be learned humanly; a phenomenon of Science” (p. 591). And the Bible promises that “the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword” (Hebrews 4:12). Christian Science helps all prove this. This healing happened about 35 years ago and has been permanent.

Another time, I awoke out of sleep with my body shaking uncontrollably. I was not able to pray for myself, nor was I physically able to call a practitioner. But I was able to ask my wife to call a practitioner for me.

Again, in a period of minutes, my body settled down and I was perfectly well. Never in the 30 years since then did that difficulty happen again. I learned then, and I continue to learn daily, that “sorrow is turned into joy when the body is controlled by spiritual Life, Truth, and Love” (Science and Health, p. 14).

Of course, I’ve had many, many other healings during these decades. Many of them have taken longer. (And some of them have taken a lot longer than I would have liked!) But I treasure each one, and each one gave me a better understanding of the essence of God and my relationship to God—intact and perfect.

The ideas in Science and Health have been my only—and effective—medicine for all my life. I am very grateful to my parents for introducing me to Christian Science from early childhood.
