Quick healing during a flight

From the October 1, 2018 issue of the Christian Science Sentinel

As a student of Christian Science, I am so grateful for the understanding that God is always there for His beloved children, meeting every need with love. I am always inspired by the testimonies of healing that I read in the Christian Science magazines, and I love the idea of sharing an experience of my own.

I have moved frequently and traveled extensively throughout my life without experiencing any issues with or anxieties about flying. This made it all the more surprising when I was on a plane a couple of years ago and there was a sudden, agonizing pain in my left ear during the final descent before landing. The pressure was unbearable. I was concerned that something in my ear was going to burst, and I began to feel nauseated from the pain.

My immediate response was to mentally recite “the scientific statement of being” found in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy: “There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all. Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error. Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal. Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual” (p. 468).

I began to repeat this declaration of spiritual truth to myself over and over—and then I realized what I was doing: literally just saying it. I was repeating the words in my mind, giving no thought to their meaning. It was almost as though I was thinking of this as some sort of mantra and expecting it to bring relief.

I paused. I knew that I needed to make a shift in my approach. So I slowed down and took my time thinking about each idea contained within this profound statement. Even as my material senses were reporting an upsetting and painful situation, I saw that there was no truth to their claims. Since Mind, God, and His spiritual expression comprise all of reality, I could know only perfection. Divine Life, Truth, Love, Soul, Spirit, Mind, Principle, and the spiritual attributes thereof make up the entirety of existence, so there is no room for error there.

Immediately, the pain receded, and within a couple of minutes it was gone entirely. I have flown many times since then and have never again experienced the same discomfort.

This was an incredible experience and reminded me of the absolute necessity of both the letter and the spirit (see Science and Health, p. 495) in our study and practice of Christian Science.
