No more back pain

Helping care for my grandchildren is a privilege and a joy. For several weeks last year my daughter-in-law needed some extra help caring for her two young children, so I went to help her on days when my son was away on business.

Prior to going to their home, I felt a pain in my lower back after moving something heavy. I had begun some study of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy to help me deny, on the basis of God’s allness, this false claim. However, there was a frequent need to lift and carry each of my grandchildren and to play with them on the floor, and the back pain grew severer. I also felt unable to pray for myself effectively.

When I returned home at the end of the week and got out of the car, I found it impossible to stand upright. The following day, a Sunday, I was still bowed over, and was able to move only slowly with a walking stick for support. I had to ask a fellow church member to take my place as Second Reader for that Sunday service because I felt I was unable to go to church. I knew I needed to be more committed to devoting time to pray about this situation.

I contacted a Christian Science practitioner for help and, thinking of my time with family, told her that I firmly understood that “God never punishes man for doing right, for honest labor, or for deeds of kindness, though they expose him to fatigue, cold, heat, contagion” (Science and Health, p. 384). She assured me that there could be nothing disjointed in my life because I am indissolubly linked to God, good. She affirmed that I have a divine, spiritual structure and must manifest perfect movement as the reflection of God. Knowing this truth and acknowledging it for myself would bring healing. On Tuesday I was still moving with difficulty, but there was overall progress.

The Christian Science Bible Lesson for the week was such a blessing—it felt tailor-made for me! I was so inspired reading and praying with that Lesson that I longed to be healed in time to fulfill my duties as Second Reader at the next church service. When I expressed my longing to be well by Friday in order to meet with the First Reader and practice reading through the Lesson together, the response from the practitioner was brief and to the point: “But why wait until Friday to be healed?” Her words turned me in humble prayer to God; I recognized that I had inadvertently dismissed the idea that God’s power could heal right away. I put my full trust in Him going forward.

By Wednesday morning I was walking upright without support when ascending and descending the stairs. In praise I sang Hymn 592 from the Christian Science Hymnal Supplement which begins: “We are walking in the light of God.” My study that morning centered on Second Corinthians 5, verses 1–9. I understood from these verses that the material body is not the reality of man, but that God forms the spiritual structure of His creation. I also prayed with some of the truths on page 93 of Mrs. Eddy’s Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, such as: “… all cause and effect are in God. Fear is a belief of sensation in matter: this belief is neither maintained by Science nor supported by facts, and exists only as fable.… there is in reality no disease.”

Friday was full of blessings. Both the drive to church to practice and taking the step onto the Readers’ platform were possible for me. Moving and standing were comfortable, too. I practiced reading the Bible Lesson with gratitude in my heart. While reading on Sunday—completely healed—I felt upheld by divine Love throughout the church service, and I rejoiced in being able to read the inspiring words of the Lesson.

“With God all things are possible” (Mark 10:27). I am so grateful to our Father, God, and to the Christian Science practitioner for her encouraging metaphysical work, which healed me of pain and immobility and assured me of God’s allness and omnipotence. I was able to return to caring for my grandchildren, knowing that the blessed power of divine Love is forever upholding and protecting me.
