Child healed of asthma
When my elder son was born, he seemed to be healthy and cheerful, but after six months he became sick with symptoms of chest blockage. I thought it was a seasonal cough or cold and consulted doctors for his treatment, which provided some relief. But after a few days, the symptoms would reoccur. Eventually, to my surprise, the doctors diagnosed it as asthma. He would have to use an inhaler for the rest of his life. Because two of my in-laws have the same problem, the doctors declared the condition hereditary.
I still remember the day a few years after that diagnosis when my sister-in-law came into my room and told me about Christian Science. She said it teaches that all things are possible with God (see Matthew 19:26). I wanted to attend Sunday services at the Christian Science Society in Chandigarh to learn more, but my husband didn’t want me to go. We belonged to a Hindu family, and Christian Science was new to us. My sister-in-law suggested that she take my son with her to attend the Christian Science Sunday School. My husband and I agreed. So my son began learning about his relation to God in Sunday School each week, and I continued to want to attend church.
Then, in November 2008 a fire broke out in our store. When my sister-in-law prayed with a Christian Science practitioner, my whole family saw the results of those prayers. We were protected from harm, and the income from our shop was renewed. Witnessing God’s provision and protection broke all resistance toward Christian Science in our home (see “My supportive church family,” The Christian Science Journal, May 2010). After this incident, when I asked my husband again if I might attend the Christian Science Society, he agreed.
I regularly attended Sunday and Wednesday services, where I began to learn about God and my relation to Him as His child. I also started reading the weekly Bible Lesson found in the Christian Science Quarterly and sought the prayerful help of a Christian Science practitioner for various issues in my life. But I didn’t feel confident to ask for help regarding my son’s asthma, because doctors had convinced me that this could never be healed.
While reading the Bible Lesson one day, I came to this: “In Science man is the offspring of Spirit. The beautiful, good, and pure constitute his ancestry. His origin is not, like that of mortals, in brute instinct, nor does he pass through material conditions prior to reaching intelligence. Spirit is his primitive and ultimate source of being; God is his Father, and Life is the law of his being” (Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 63). Elsewhere, Science and Health says, “Heredity is not a law” (p. 178). These lines inspired me a lot. I reasoned that if God is my son’s Father and Mother, then he inherited health, not sickness. I tried to see my son as God’s son. When I started praying with these ideas, my fears subsided, and my son’s symptoms subsided, too; there was no more need for the inhaler. All of this happened so naturally as we relied on Spirit.
In the many years since, my son has been in very good health. Both of my sons and I depend on prayer for our every need. And my husband also appreciates this remarkable healing that only Christian Science could have given us.
I am so grateful to God for such a big blessing, to Mary Baker Eddy for this beautiful way called Christian Science, and to my sister-in-law for showing me this path. I am also grateful to Sunday School teachers, to my Christian Science teacher, and to the Christian Science practitioner who helped me prayerfully with so many healings.
