Christian Science has brought healing to my life in countless ways, often with the help of devoted Christian Science practitioners, who lovingly and selflessly support our spiritual upward growth. These wonderful healings include character improvement; overcoming asthma, painful knee and back issues, and the flu; delivering two children harmoniously without medication; and resolving financial and relationship challenges—to highlight just a few.
Not too long ago, I was awakened out of sleep to painful symptoms associated with severe food poisoning. As I could not focus my thinking, I immediately called a practitioner. He lovingly accepted my request for Christian Science treatment. I also listened to that week’s Bible Lesson from the Christian Science Quarterly, which was on the subject “Doctrine of Atonement.” I knew I needed to let God’s love fill my consciousness and to feel the magnificent presence of health that God surrounds us with at all times.
I also listened to some Sentinel Audio Chats on JSH-Online.com. Audio programs available on this site are great resources for comfort and inspiration when one feels alone and overwhelmed. I then fell peacefully asleep and was able to awake in time for work, completely healed.
As I was getting ready for the day, I felt led by God, divine Mind, to reverse the many concerns and questions coming to my thought. Questions such as “Wow, where did that come from?” tried to seduce me into believing the sickness had been real. But the truth is that it had never touched me because I am God’s creation, spiritual and true. And it could not sneak back in the form of a memory.
Next I thought, “But what was it?” But I recognized that thought as aggressive mental suggestion—animal magnetism—and I did not give it a place in my consciousness. Christian Science reveals animal magnetism as a lie, as nothing more than a suggestion that God, or good, isn’t the only power. Mary Baker Eddy states in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: “The nothingness of nothing is plain; but we need to understand that error is nothing, and that its nothingness is not saved, but must be demonstrated in order to prove the somethingness—yea, the allness—of Truth” (p. 346).
The last push of the lie was a suggestion that I had felt alone, vulnerable, in pain, and cold. But again, knowing that in the realm of reality—the kingdom of heaven where we all truly dwell—there is no sickness, I knew I could put this false memory out of consciousness. I did so with gratitude—gratitude for God, for the tremendous gift of Christian Science practitioners, for my church family, and for the Christian Science pastor, the Bible and Science and Health.
In the Old Testament we read how, when Elisha and his servant were in need of God’s deliverance, and the servant was afraid, “the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha” (II Kings 6:17). I like to think of those “horses and chariots of fire” as representing God’s angel thoughts. To me, the story teaches that God’s angels are ever with us, that we always have a spiritual army ready to defend us. We are never left alone to fight sin, sickness, or death, because God destroys these errors. We are deeply loved, cared for, and watched over 24/7 by God and His heavenly host.
It was a lighter, freer step and heart, overflowing with gratitude, that winged the rest of my day; it was the closeness to our Father-Mother God I felt that allowed my thoughts to soar peacefully and joyfully. Every healing in Christian Science contributes to the final destruction of the lie that illness is inevitable for mankind, and every healing reveals man’s individual right to healthful self-government. We can all advance spiritually through Christian healing, God’s Christly gift to all mankind!
