My cycle hit an oil slick—and I felt God's care

I have learned that nothing offers more complete and immediate protection in time of need than God, divine Love. This became clear to me a number of years ago, at the beginning of my sophomore year at college. I had to go to the campus one beautiful Saturday morning, and decided to ride over on my motorcycle.

Before leaving home, I took a few minutes to read that week’s Christian Science Bible Lesson. This was a little unusual for me, as I rarely studied the lesson on Saturdays. As I flipped through the selections from the Bible and Mary Baker Eddy’s book Science and Health, one particular Bible passage grabbed my attention: “Mine eyes are ever toward the Lord; for he shall pluck my feet out of the net.”

As I read it again, I asked myself what these words meant to me. It seemed that eyes symbolized what I held in my heart, my true desire. When I thought about what was truly meaningful to me, the answer was simple: I knew that I loved God. I loved how an understanding of His Christ presence had healed me and members of my family of all kinds of physical illnesses and other problems over many years.

I loved the uplift I felt when I thought about God being the source of all life, the source of good, the Creator of harmony, health, and happiness. So I could trust that God loved, protected, preserved, and cared for me and all His children always.

At this point, I closed the Bible, dressed for my motorcycle ride and set off. It was a sparkling, sunny day, and I enjoyed zipping along the busy highway.

I was moving from the center to the inside lane when I hit a small oil slick. I immediately lost control of the bike, which skidded to the right, across three lanes of traffic. I was ejected from the bike and flew through the air.

Everything seemed to happen in slow motion. But throughout the experience, I had no fear. I felt the tangible presence of good. I felt the presence of God so deeply that I felt surrounded by Him.

I bounced three times on my helmeted head, my legs straight up in the air. The next thing I knew, I'd landed on my feet. The momentum carried me forward onto my hands and knees. I humbly thanked God for His life of good and my undying role in it. I was completely fine, with only a slightly skinned knee and knuckle.

The traffic on the highway had stopped, and motorists were gazing at me in astonishment. Frankly, I was a little embarrassed at the attention.

My face mask had sheared away and lay next to the front tire of the car behind me. As I walked over to pick it up, I noticed the driver looked very pale. I spoke to her to assure her that I was all right, and even wished her a good day. The color came back to her face as I talked with her.

Next, I headed over to my motorcycle, which had come safely to rest on the shoulder of the highway. As I crossed the lanes of traffic, I smiled and waved to the stopped motorists to let them know I was fine.

Two men were pulling my bike upright and putting it onto its stand. As I approached, one of them said shakily, “Do you know how lucky you are?” I told them that it wasn’t luck. They had just witnessed God’s love in action. I thanked them, got on my motorcycle, which had only a scratch, and went home.

I experienced no after-affects from the incident, but felt I had gained a stronger understanding that God is always present, loving us and protecting us from harm.

I had experienced the promise found in Psalms, “Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.” Or thy motorcycle against an oil slick.

God's constant protection:
