The impact of Christ Jesus’ words

My first recollection of learning about Jesus was at a Protestant Sunday School when I was five or six years old. What I heard that day about him left me awe-struck—he walked on water! It was the most amazing thing I had ever heard, and I wanted to do it too. 

As soon as I got home, it came to me that I could just fill a large bucket with water and step into the bucket. Well, of course, my feet went right to the bottom. I quickly realized I could not walk on water, but that didn’t take away the awe I felt for Jesus and the desire to follow in his footsteps. 

It was many years later that I saw this encouraging statement in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: “Because you cannot walk on the water and raise the dead, you have no right to question the great might of divine Science in these directions. Be thankful that Jesus, who was the true demonstrator of Science, did these things, and left his example for us” (Mary Baker Eddy, p. 329).
