Finding a deeper sense of home

I have been traveling and moving around the United States a lot lately for various reasons—for work, school, conferences, etc. I was starting to feel as if I had no home, and that I always wanted to be in a state where I wasn’t, or with people I wasn’t with. Feelings of loneliness started to creep in, even when I had many people around me. It felt as if my family, the most important part of home for me, was out of reach.

When I recently moved to Boston, I decided to pray about this. I knew that changing locations is often a part of human life, but I didn’t want to feel displaced any longer. I began by praying about the concept of home. I remembered Hymn 278 in the Christian Science Hymnal where it says, “Pilgrim on earth, home and heaven are within thee” (adapt. © CSBD). I felt an immediate, deep comfort from this line.

I had grown up in Christian Science and had learned that God, divine Love, is omnipresent. I realized in this moment that it was impossible for Love to ever leave my side; I couldn’t be outside Love’s omnipresence.
