Healed on a backpacking trip

Several years ago, my youngest daughter and I had an opportunity to go backpacking with a hiking group. We felt this would be a fresh experience to move us forward after her dad recently passed away. This first adventure was to hike the Chilkoot Trail in Alaska, in an area where gold miners had once sought their fortune.

To prepare for the trip, we practiced walking with our packs in a local park, as this was a new activity for both of us. We also prepared prayerfully, realizing that our intention for the spirit of this activity was to glorify God.

Shortly after dinner out the night before our flight from Vancouver to Skagway, Alaska, I began experiencing diarrhea. I quickly called a Christian Science practitioner, who helped me turn my thought to God’s all-power. The practitioner’s message was a strong objection to the belief that food could be more powerful than God’s love for me—a love that was being evidenced in this mother-daughter backpacking adventure.
