Prayer

At evening I would pray to Thee,
When shadows round my pathway fall
And the betrayer greeteth me,
Some erring sense material,
And fear and hate around me throng.
Oh, may that Mind then dwell in me,
And may that Spirit make me strong,
That watched above Gethsemane.
In patience and humility
At evening I would pray to Thee.

At morning I would pray to Thee,
When the first beams of Truth appear
And turning from the tomb I see
The risen Christ, who standeth near,
And Love’s communion table spread.
May that sweet presence comfort me,
As long ago it comforted
The fishermen of Galilee.
In joy and high expectancy
At morning I would pray to Thee.

At noontide I would pray to Thee,
When the last shadow falls away
And understanding gratefully
With progress marks one more glad day
Of purified ascending thought.
May then that vision come to me
With Life’s eternal promise fraught,
The ascension hour’s at Bethany.
In wisdom and in purity
At noontide I would pray to Thee.
