Healed on a morning run
This is adapted from a testimony originally posted during The Mother Church’s online Wednesday testimony meeting.
There’s nothing like a run in the early morning. It’s a fun way to wake up. But one morning, soon after I started, I felt pain in one of my legs. I was tempted to stop right there. But I quickly countered the fear that I might be injured, by turning to God in prayer.
I realized that while watching the US Open Tennis Championships not long before, I had heard a lot of banter about the health and ages of athletes. I asked myself, mid-stride, “Am I accepting false material beliefs about age controlling our health or well-being?”
I then started praying with “the scientific statement of being,” found in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy on page 468 . I thought about the truths in that statement, which talks about how God, Spirit, is All, and we are His spiritual reflection—so matter is not part of our real identity.
As I prayed, I quickly felt the pain disappear. I felt so grateful—not simply for the pain going away, but for these wonderful ideas that had been available right there, right in the middle of a run! It also made me think about how these truths about the source of our health and well-being apply to everyone, and I acknowledged our safety, completeness, and spiritual innocence from physical beliefs that might try to make us afraid.
I also affirmed that the real identity of each of us is the expression of God’s qualities—not personal qualities, abilities, or will-power. Rather, we are the outcome of God’s goodness, which is reflected in qualities such as strength, harmony, health, and beauty. These aren’t “personal” attainments, but rather spiritual qualities that belong to God, Spirit; and they are inherent in each of us because in spiritual reality we reflect the very nature and goodness of God Himself.
What was also fun about this run was that I made it without stopping. It wasn’t a very long distance, but up until this run, my running had been somewhat sporadic, and in the past I had found that I needed to pause.
I’m very grateful for how Christian Science can be utilized anywhere—even in the middle of a run.
