Study of Science and Health dissolves antipathy

I was born and raised in Kenya. Being the only child in the family of a father who was a drunkard was quite a challenge. My dad always came home late at night, caused a commotion, hurt my mom, and then went to sleep. He didn’t seem to care about us—about my education, whether we had food, and many other things that concerned our family. For quite some time I felt I was loathed, and this feeling grew stronger with every rising sun. I wanted to talk it over with someone, yet there was no one around to help. My mom was already a stressed-out woman, and I didn’t want to add to her frustrations.

One day I felt inspired to turn to Science and Health with Key to Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. I didn’t know that this was going to be the turning point in my life. I opened the book to the chapter on prayer, which brought a great healing in my heart. This statement caught my attention and made me pause and meditate for a while: “Are we really grateful for the good already received? Then we shall avail ourselves of the blessings we have, and thus be fitted to receive more” (p. 3).

I asked myself, “Have I been grateful for the good received—for example, for my parents?” I realized that I had always been resentful and not grateful, and that I could find good qualities even in my dad. These words pierced my heart and made me crave for the fast renewal of my mind.
