A healing hour with the shepherd psalm

I was stuck in a dead-end job and could barely make myself get up for work each day. Salary increases were tied to upward movement, but that potential had evaporated. And the job itself had become tedious.

My prayers had been more of the “God, please show me a way out of this” variety than a humble longing to know God’s reality everywhere and for everyone. Through the teachings of Christian Science, my heart was familiar with this spiritual reality—good, dependable, satisfying, unlimited. But I didn’t feel willing or able to look beyond the details of the day-to-day grind.

One evening at the midweek testimony meeting of my branch Church of Christ, Scientist, my pining for a different job shifted. The message of God’s loving care for His dear creation, shining through the readings and testimonies of healing at the meeting, gently but insistently cut through my preoccupation with material conditions. Then came the first clear directive I’d had in months—take a personal day off work.
