Prayer resolves problem purchase

Recently I purchased a truck that ended up breaking down on my way home. The individual who had sold the truck is a collector of cars and has a history of selling good, working trucks, so I was sure he had checked out this truck before selling it to my wife and me. Though I felt let down, I was grateful that a kind gentleman helped push the three-quarter-ton truck into a safe parking space until it could be towed to a mechanic’s garage.

That evening before retiring, I prayed with truths from the Christian Science Bible Lesson for that week. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, wrote in a poem that “loss is gain.” The full sentence reads: “Wait, and love more for every hate, and fear / No ill,—since God is good, and loss is gain” (“The Mother’s Evening Prayer,” Poems, p. 4).

Whatever I felt I had lost in this purchase, I saw it as an opportunity to gain a keener spiritual perspective on the needs the truck was intended to meet. My reason for buying it was to acquire a more practical mode of transportation for some projects I had to do, and I knew I could trust God, the Giver of all good, to meet that need. God’s provision for me can never truly be lost, so I could pray and maintain an expectancy of having good transportation even though the truck was in the garage for repairs.
