A burden lightened

A number of years ago when I was unemployed, a friend recommended that I apply for a job where she worked, which was in the office of a private school. She said that they were looking for someone to help with the heavy workload.

Toward the end of my first day at work there, my lower back became increasingly uncomfortable. I drove home and went directly to bed in a great deal of pain. I called a Christian Science practitioner for treatment and began to pray for myself, as I was accustomed to do when faced with challenges of every sort.

When I awoke the next morning, any effort to stand up still resulted in extreme pain. I didn’t want to disturb my husband, who was in another room studying, so I carefully slid out of bed and slowly worked my way across the floor on my hands and knees toward the bathroom. Halfway there, it suddenly occurred to me that I was not a beast of burden carrying the heavy workload of others. I laughed out loud at the thought. It was actually an especially appropriate image since the school had horses and donkeys for the children to learn about, care for, and ride. By the time I reached the bathroom, I was able to stand up without pain.
