Communing with God

I’ve been thinking deeply about these words of Mary Baker Eddy: “We must talk more closely to God. Bring Him nearer to us …. We must feel and know that God is what we live in—like the atmosphere and the sunlight” (We Knew Mary Baker Eddy, Expanded Edition, Vol. II, p. 315).

How do we “talk more closely to God”? How do we keep God consistently close? A starting point for me is Psalms 46:10: “Be still, and know that I am God.” There are two parts to this verse: First, one must “be still,” or calm, to hear something important. What should be silenced? Hush the internal monologue buzzing like a beehive that would try to push to the surface. To be attentive and focus on what comes is to honor God and provide a pure space to think about Him.

When visiting a relative’s church service, I heard the minister say, “The devil doesn’t have to do much—all he has to do is distract you.” Distracted by fragmented thoughts, we may unwittingly bow down to thoughts that are in vain or without purpose. But staying in a God-focused calm, one invites God to reign in consciousness.
