Hope

There’s a spectacular tunnel we have to drive through on the way to my grandsons’ home. Their other grandmother was driving our elder grandson through it one day and asked if he knew the meaning of “light at the end of the tunnel.” He hadn’t heard that one, so she explained the phrase. At that moment they couldn’t see daylight at the other end, but then they rounded the bend in the middle of the tunnel and sure enough there it was!

I’ve been thinking about hope as a spiritual gift, along with faith and love. Sometimes it seems as though we’ve headed into a dark tunnel, and there’s no hope in sight—in fact, all those biblical references to hope seem to be cheating us. But then, through prayer, we turn a spiritual corner, and hope leads us forward until we’re out in the daylight once more.

Mary Baker Eddy knew what it was to face dark times of discouragement, but her remarkable life story shows how time and again she came through with absolute assurance that nothing could ever obliterate the light of divine Truth. She wrote: “Spiritual sense, contradicting the material senses, involves intuition, hope, faith, understanding, fruition, reality. ... When the real is attained, which is announced by Science, joy is no longer a trembler, nor is hope a cheat” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 298).
