God knows what's best

When I first decided to look into taking Christian Science class instruction, I read an article in the Sentinel that meant a great deal to me, and I thought that the author of the piece would be a wonderful teacher. I was working at The Mother Church at the time, and I learned that this teacher was also working at the Church, so I scheduled an interview with him. During the interview I was very impressed with his demeanor and love for Christian Science; however, I couldn’t get past a few things. First of all, he looked way too young to be a teacher—I felt I needed a teacher who had the wisdom of an older person. His class was in a southern state in the middle of the summer—I couldn’t imagine spending two weeks in that heat! And, he hadn’t taught very many classes yet. Again, I felt I needed a “seasoned professional.”

So after the interview, I thanked this man and walked out of his office. Later that day, I made an appointment with another Christian Science teacher, one who I felt met the above requirements: He was older, his classes were taught in a beautiful mountainous area of the western United States, and he had already taught more classes. The next day, I went to interview with this man. After I’d arrived at his office and had introduced myself, he asked me to have a seat. Then he asked me if he could have a moment of silence. After about a minute or so, he looked at me with great sincerity and said that he wanted to begin the interview with some suggestions. He said that it wouldn’t be helpful to choose a teacher based on age, geographical location, or number of years teaching. Oh my gosh! I hadn’t said a word up to that point, other than to introduce myself.

After hearing those suggestions, I rose up out of my seat, thanked this man for his insight, and told him that I needed to go back to the other teacher I’d already spoken with and ask if I could be accepted into his next class. I did, and I was!
