Dignity and Soul

Recently, I saw a news program about families struggling to stay above the poverty line. Some of these men and women couldn’t find jobs and were relying on charity to get by. While they were grateful for temporary help, they wanted so desperately to be self-sufficient. Most of them had a specific plan of action, but when their plans weren’t working out, there was lots of frustration and tears.

I became even more grateful that the Sentinel was working on an issue related to meeting the spiritual needs of humanity. Self-sufficiency is an excellent goal, but I couldn’t help thinking that it works best when we pray to see that God is our true provider, always holding us up, and we listen to spiritual intuition for which forks in the road to take. This week’s cover topic is based on a quote from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy (Soul is used here as another name for God): “Soul has infinite resources with which to bless mankind, and happiness would be more readily attained and would be more secure in our keeping, if sought in Soul” (p. 60). 

Our lead writer, Tom Asher, says, “We need not stay on the carousel of personal reasoning where we go up and down, around and around, but never really get anywhere. God imparts freshness, spontaneity, spiritual vision . . .” (p. 4). David Boggs shares how he never gave up on praying about his family’s financial situation (p. 6). And read “ ‘Gentled in’ by God” on p.(10) to hear about some horse training that syncs up with what we’re all about as Christian disciples. We hope you come away with the feeling that the dignity of Soul promises you won’t be left empty-handed or forgotten.
